U.S. Rep. Nikki Budzinski of Illinois, along with immigration nonprofit and advocacy organizations, gathered at Hoyleton in Fairview Heights on Friday, November 14, 2025, to address a recent increase in immigration enforcement activity across Central and Southern Illinois.
Advocates Raise Concerns Over Rising ICE Activity in Southern Illinois
Organizations from throughout the 13th District, including Springfield, Decatur and the Metro East, raised concerns about a spike in workplace raids, families avoiding health care due to fear of Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence, and the broader chilling effect on immigrant communities. Participants also discussed steps lawmakers and local groups can take to protect residents.
Budzinski: Bringing Local Leaders Together to Keep Communities Safe
"The surge in ICE activity we have seen across Central and Southern Illinois is deeply concerning," Budzinski said. "I am grateful for the opportunity to bring together local immigration advocates, nonprofit leaders and my friend Congressman Chuy García to talk about how we can work together to keep our communities safe."

Kristen Eng-Shinn, director of community support services at Hoyleton, said she appreciated Budzinski's commitment to meeting directly with service providers.

The Protecting Sensitive Locations Act
Budzinski is a cosponsor of García's Protecting Sensitive Locations Act, which would prohibit immigration enforcement in places that provide essential services, including houses of worship, schools, hospitals, courthouses and community centers.
