What Does a Healthy Relationship Look Like?
At our organization, we use evidence-based programs like Making Proud Choices! to help teens build the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy decisions. The ideas below are inspired by the same skills and messages taught in our classes.
Healthy relationships are built on respect, trust, communication, and making proud, responsible choices.
Communication: Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say
One of the key skills we practice is clear communication. In a healthy relationship, both people can express their thoughts and feelings honestly.
- You can speak up for yourself
- You actively listen to your partner
- You can talk through problems without yelling, blaming, or shutting down
Using strong communication skills helps you avoid misunderstandings and make decisions you feel good about.
Setting Limits & Boundaries
A major focus of Making Proud Choices! is learning how to set personal limits and stick to them.
- You decide what you are comfortable with ahead of time
- You communicate your limits clearly
- You respect your partner’s limits just as much as your own
Healthy relationships support your right to say “no” at any time.
Using Refusal Skills: STOP, THINK, ACT
When you feel pressure, it’s important to slow things down and make a plan.
- STOP – Pause and take a breath
- THINK – Consider your goals and possible consequences
- ACT – Make a choice that aligns with your values
You can also use refusal skills like:
- Saying no firmly
- Suggesting another activity
- Giving a reason or repeating your answer
These skills help you stay in control of your choices.
Making Proud & Responsible Decisions
Healthy relationships include thinking about your future and protecting your health.
- You consider the risks of sexual activity
- You understand ways to prevent unintended pregnancy and STIs
- You make choices that align with your personal goals
In Making Proud Choices!, we talk about how every decision can impact your future—and you have the power to choose wisely.
Respect & Equality
Respect means treating each other as equals.
- No one is in control of the other person
- You support each other’s goals and independence
- You feel valued for who you are
A healthy relationship should never include pressure, control, or fear.
Support for Your Future Goals
Another important concept we discuss is how relationships should support—not distract from—your goals.
- You encourage each other to succeed
- You stay focused on school, activities, and future plans
- You make choices that help you build the life you want
- Watch for Warning Signs
Even with strong skills, it’s important to recognize unhealthy behaviors:
- Pressure to have sex
- Ignoring your boundaries
- Controlling behavior or jealousy
- Put-downs or threats
These are signs that a relationship may not be healthy.
You Have the Power to Make Proud Choices
The skills you learn—like communication, setting limits, and using refusal strategies—help you build relationships that are safe, respectful, and supportive.
You deserve a relationship where you feel confident, respected, and in control of your future.
