Opening Doors: Juan's Path to University

For Juan, navigating college as a first-generation student was daunting due to unfamiliar financial and academic processes. The Puentes de Esperanza program provided scholarship support for his engineering studies, easing pressure on his family. His mother, Norma, describes the staff as an extended family who offered unconditional support and guidance through unfamiliar systems. They found community with others from migrant backgrounds, transforming their struggle into a story of shared hope and gratitude.

HOW WE CAN HELP

How to Be an Ally to Immigrants

At Hoyleton Youth and Family Services, we believe that every person deserves to live with dignity, safety, and opportunity—no matter where they come from. Being an ally to immigrants means taking small and large steps to make our communities more inclusive and supportive. Through Puentes de Esperanza (Bridges of Hope) and our partners, we invite you to join us in this vital work.

1. Start with Conversations

Understanding the experiences of immigrants begins with listening. Take time to talk with your neighbors, coworkers, and friends about their journeys and challenges. Learning about immigration laws, rights, and the systems that affect immigrant families helps build empathy and awareness. A simple, honest conversation can be the first step toward meaningful change.

2. Be Inclusive in Language & Actions

Words matter. Use respectful and accurate language when referring to immigrant communities. Avoid terms that stereotype or dehumanize. Inclusion also means showing up—attending cultural events, learning a few phrases in another language, and making everyone feel welcome in shared spaces.

3. Support Organizations that Help Immigrants

Many local and regional organizations are dedicated to protecting immigrant rights and supporting families. Consider volunteering, donating, or partnering with these groups, including:

Contact your elected officials to support humane immigration reform.
Attend local government meetings to push for immigrant-friendly policies.
Vote for leaders who stand for human rights and pathways to citizenship.

Every action—big or small—helps move our society toward fairness and compassion.

5. Offer Direct Support in Your Community

Being an ally also means showing up in everyday moments. Whether it’s helping a neighbor fill out forms, offering transportation, or connecting someone with a language class, simple acts of kindness make a lasting difference.

Support immigrant-owned businesses, share immigrant voices and stories, and celebrate the diversity that strengthens our communities.

6. Keep Learning & Stay Engaged

True allyship is an ongoing journey. Continue educating yourself about immigration laws and current issues. Follow immigrant-led organizations, attend community forums, and speak out against injustice whenever you see it. The more we learn, the better we can stand together.
